It debuted at the 24 Hours of Le Mans in 1997, where one entry finished 12th overall. Nissan's heritage collection lists a VRH35L 3,495 cc twin-turbo V8 for the racing car. In 1998, Nissan entered four R390 GT1s; all finished in the overall top ten, led by the No. 32 car in third place.
