The W202 is the very first C-Class generation launched by Mercedes-Benz. At its launch, it was presented as an "affordable" family sedan.  Replacing the W201 was not easy, yet Mercedes succeeded with the W202 series, presented in May 1993. The initial engines were the 180 with 122hp, the 200D with 75hp and the 280 with the 6-cylinder in-line engine, 193hp. There was also no shortage of AMG sports versions, initially with the C36, then with the C43 of 1997. The break configuration was marketed from March 1996. Production stopped in May 2000, after 1,870,254 examples built, of which 243,871 were break. The most widespread engine version was the 180, with 36% of total sales.
