Volkswagen introduced the Caddy in 1982 as a compact commercial vehicle based on the Golf I for the German and European markets. The pickup had already run for three years in the United States, where it launched in 1979 as the Rabbit and was built at the Westmoreland plant. European Caddys were built by TAS in Sarajevo with 1.6 litre diesel, 1.6 litre petrol and 1.8 litre petrol engines, and had a payload of 625 kg. TAS production ended in 1992 after 94,000 units.
