The first BMW M3 was shown at the 1985 Frankfurt Motor Show and built on the E30 generation of the 3 Series from 1986 to 1991, with 17,970 cars made in total. It was a homologation special for Group A touring car racing and used the S14 four-cylinder engine, rated at 195 PS with a catalytic converter. On track it won the Deutsche Tourenwagen Meisterschaft in 1987 and 1989 and the World Touring Car Championship in 1987.
